Nokia X Tops 1 Million Pre-Orders in China

China is a key focus market for most smartphone makers. It’s home to the world’s largest wireless carrier, China Mobile, and is a major growth opportunity for handset makers looking to tap new smartphone markets. That’s part of the reasons why Nokia decided to launch the Nokia X, a device that will target markets where it didn’t feel Windows Phone could come down cheap enough to attract new buyers. China, for one, appears super excited for the phone.

Nokia on Friday announced via Twitter that more than 1 million people in China have pre-ordered its Android-powered Nokia X. That’s good news for the Finnish phone maker and Microsoft. Nokia has to prove to Microsoft that it’s decision to launch an Android device makes sense – and clearly there’s demand, even in a market where Samsung, ZTE, Huawei and others have a huge amount of control. For Microsoft, it’s good news because the phone is a delivery mechanism for its services like OneDrive and Skype.

Nokia is also going to launch the Nokia X+ and the Nokia XL, which may attract folks looking for a bit more storage or a larger display. Either way, it appears that the Nokia X isn’t going to be a flop.
