CES 2013: Samsung shows off ‘Youm flexible display’ for phones
At the ongoing Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, Samsung has shown off a prototype phone with a flexible display screen. Samsung has branded the screen ‘Youm’.
Accoridng to Brian Berkeley, senior vice president of Samsung Display, a flat-screen unit of Samsung Electronics. “It won’t break even if it’s dropped. This new form-factor will really begin to change how people interact with their devices, opening up new lifestyle possibilities … allowing our partners to create a whole new ecosystem of devices.”
But don’t expect the screen to be available on your devices anytime soon. According to the guys at The Verge, who managed to get their hands on the device, the prototype isn’t truly a phone — it lacks a radio, operating system, camera, and most any other feature you’d find in a phone. Instead, in its current form, the prototype is more like a touch-capable digital picture frame.

The Youm screen uses OLED display and you could soon see Samsung making smartphones that have bendable, rollable, and foldable displays. According to this report, the device was white and black with a display around 5-inches in size and had a 720p resolution.
In December it was reported that the Samsung Galaxy SIV, which is the company’s next big smartphone release, would have an unbreakable screen. Samsung has been experimenting with new technology for some time now and plastic, bendable OLED’s could be here sooner than you think.
