Twitter announces 200 million active users on seventh birthday

Popular social network and micro-blogging platform, Twitter, has completed seven years of existence. The day marks the occasion when Twitter co-founder, Jack Dorsey, sent out the first tweet. To mark the occasion, Twitter has also revealed that it has more than 200 million active users sending over 400 million tweets every day. This means that the social network has added 60 million users since last year. It had announced 140 million active users and 340 million tweets a day, last year, on the occasion of its sixth birthday.

The company has also created a video to celebrate some of the key moments on Twitter. The video showcases Jack Dorsey's first "just setting up my Twttr" tweet on 21 March 2006, the first hashtag and retweet in 2007, the launch of the first official Twitter Japan service in 2008, the first tweet from space, the Egyptian revolution at Tahrir square, Japan earthquake and tsunami, London olympics, US presidential elections, Grammys and the launch of the Vine app, among other events. The video reflects how Twitter has played a pivotal role in connecting people across the world on different occasions including during the time of revolutions, sporting events, calamity and new feats.

While there's a growing debate on whether Twitter has empowered the common man, giving him a megaphone to shout out his opinion or if it's made it easy for anyone to post any information without verifying its credibility, and even malign someone, the medium continues to grow as evident from the increasing number of users and tweets.
