Nokia X Tops 1 Million Pre-Orders in China

China is a key focus market for most smartphone makers. It’s home to the world’s largest wireless carrier, China Mobile, and is a major growth opportunity for handset makers looking to tap new smartphone markets. That’s part of the reasons why Nokia decided to launch the Nokia X, a device that will target markets where it didn’t feel Windows Phone could come down cheap enough to attract new buyers. China, for one, appears super excited for the phone.

Nokia on Friday announced via Twitter that more than 1 million people in China have pre-ordered its Android-powered Nokia X. That’s good news for the Finnish phone maker and Microsoft. Nokia has to prove to Microsoft that it’s decision to launch an Android device makes sense – and clearly there’s demand, even in a market where Samsung, ZTE, Huawei and others have a huge amount of control. For Microsoft, it’s good news because the phone is a delivery mechanism for its services like OneDrive and Skype.

Nokia is also going to launch the Nokia X+ and the Nokia XL, which may attract folks looking for a bit more storage or a larger display. Either way, it appears that the Nokia X isn’t going to be a flop.

Flipboard reaches 56 million users; to focus on generating revenue

Social magazine app Flipboard has reached 56 million readers, and the company is now considering ways to capitalise on its growth by focusing on generating revenue. Mike McCue, the company’s CEO, revealed at the TechCrunch Disrupt conference in New York that Flipboard has seen six million new users since it was updated back in March.

The iOS version of the app was bumped up to version 2.0 in March, which allowed users to publish their own content. The app saw more than 50,000 magazines created on version 2.0 within two weeks alone.

CEO McCue at the Disrupt event spoke about his plans of revenue generation (Image Credit: TechCrunch)

McCue said the 2.0 update is also in the works for the Android version of the app. He said the company is “putting the finishing touches on it” and it should be available “very, very soon”. McCue admitted that the Android version of the update has been more difficult to develop than the iOS version, as it has to cater to a wider category of devices.

The Android version of Flipboard has helped the service gain a huge chunk of users. After releasing the app in June last year, Flipboard's user base grew to 20 million by the end of August, up from five million in January.

"Android has been really striking in terms of how quickly it's growing," McCue said. "We don't break out iOS versus Android numbers, but [Android is] growing very, very fast and is a very important part of our strategy."

McCue’s focus is on revenue as much as on developing the app. He said Flipboard is primarily focused on helping publishers generate revenue by advertising their content. The service wants publishers to be able to charge for content as well as sell products through Flipboard. A news publication should be able to charge users to access certain sections of its paper or a clothing brand should be able to sell its products on Flipboard itself.

That’s not all; Flipboard also wants users to be able to compile articles into magazines and make money off it. That sounds very ambitious, but it could be good news for advertisers, publications and curators.

Psy's 'Gentleman' hits 200 million YouTube views in 9 days

"Gangnam Style" star Psy's new music video has garnered 200 million views on YouTube in the nine days since its release and smashed YouTube's record for single-day hits.

The video of "Gentleman" the much-anticipated follow-up to the South Korean singer's global hit reached the 200-million milestone Monday after its April 13 debut, YouTube said in a statement.

"From a stats perspective, it's one of the biggest music video launches the web has ever seen," the statement said.

The video recorded 38.4 million views on April 14, destroying the previous single-day record of 31 million views set by "KONY 2012" a documentary about a Ugandan warlord made by the charity group Invisible Children.

It was the video of "Gangnam Style", and in particular Psy's signature horse-riding dance, that pushed him to global stardom after it was posted on YouTube and turned into a viral sensation.

A satire on the luxury lifestyle of Seoul's upscale Gangnam district, it has become the most-watched YouTube video of all time, registering more than 1.5 billion views since it debuted last July.

The "Gentleman" video shows Psy, wearing his signature shades, performing his new hip-swinging dance at various locations in and around Seoul including a high-end clothing store, restaurant and a swimming pool.

The storyline features the 35-year-old singer playing pranks on women such as pulling their chairs away or untying a woman's bikini top at a swimming pool.

The new dance song was ranked Tuesday in the top 10 on iTunes music stores in a number of countries including Britain and Canada and 12th on the US Billboard's Hot 100 music chart.

It also helped earn Psy six nominations for the 2013 Billboard Music Awards to be held in Las Vegas in May, including top dance song, top streaming song and top new artist.

Messaging app hike now has 5 million users; v2.0 will bring status updates and circles

Multi-platform messaging apps are a dime a dozen on app stores catering to all platforms, which is why news that hike, one more in a long list of IM apps, has accumulated 5 million subscribers in four months.

Developed by Bharti SoftBank, hike launched globally in December 2012 and has been an instant hit. What sets hike apart is that it integrates text messaging for contacts who don’t have smartphones. According to the company, this SMS integration has resulted in a great surge in adoption of hike in India. Additionally, hike allows users to send free instant messages to contacts anywhere in the world as well as share location and multimedia content.

hike on the Play Store

Speaking about the success of the app, Kavin Bharti Mittal, Head of Product and Strategy, Bharti SoftBank, said “These are exciting times for hike and we are thrilled by the phenomenal response we've received over the last couple of months. hike has taken off globally and in India in particular our users love the fact that they can create groups with a mix of friends who have and don’t have the app and see the messages being sent and read in real-time. Free hike SMS is proving to be extremely popular in a country like India where not everyone in a group of friends has access to a data-enabled smartphone.”

Keeping in line with the focus on building innovative features like SMS integration, the developers will soon be bringing a big update to the app called hike 2.0. This update brings with it Status Updates and Moods that lets users customise their profile daily. Additionally, the app will allow users to set a "Circle of Friends", who will all be notified about new status updates and broadcasts.

Commenting on hike 2.0, Mittal said, "We’ve been carefully listening to our users and we realised the biggest thing missing in hike was status updates. With hike 2.0, we're introducing Status Updates with Moods, a simple, fun way to share what you're thinking about or what you're up to in real-time with your closest friends. Instead of the update going to everyone in your address book, you can carve out a circle of friends with whom you can share such updates."

He further added that the Circles feature is culturally relevant as people do not want to share everything with all of their contacts. “We want to share a lot of things with our inner circle of friends. Drawing inspiration from there, we’ve built a simple and easy way of allowing our users to share updates to only a select set of friends and maintaining their privacy.”

Now that's a steal! Google to buy $39 million network for one dollar

Terms of an agreement between Google Inc. and Provo, Utah, show the company will pay $1 for a fiber-optic system that cost $39 million to build. (Also see: Google Fiber gigabit Internet headed to Provo, Utah)

Even as Google takes ownership of the municipal network, Provo will have to pay off loans for its construction for another dozen years.

Provo officials say it's a good deal because the system hasn't been able to pay for itself. They say Google will make upgrades and complete connections to every home.

And Google Fiber will offer basic Internet service at no charge for a $30 hookup fee far less than the current $700 activation fee.

Provo households are paying off the cost of the network with a $5.35 monthly utility fee, and city officials say they'll get something for their money now. (Also see: Google Fiber: 10 things to know about the 1000Mbps Internet service)

Gangnam Style sequel garners 44 million views in 2 days

Psy is at it again! The darling of internet viral videos has released his new K-Pop track, Gentleman on YouTube, garnering 44 million views on the site since its debut on Saturday. The sequel to the whirlwind super-hit Gangnam Style looks like it is on its way to becoming a viral success too.

Gentleman picks up where Gangnam Style left off. The track is catchy and the dance is hypnotic, keeping in theme with what has turned out to be Psy’s signature style. The Korean sensation still makes pelvic thrusting moves, albeit a little less energetically this time around. You will not be hearing this track at your local IPL match for sure.

Can Gentleman catch up with Gangnam Style?

Psy plays it safe and includes themes and artistes that were a part of his successful single, Gangnam Style. In fact, there is a sequence in a lift in this video too. Unlike his previous video where Psy was wooing the ladies, he’s doing exactly the opposite of what the title suggests – he’s being as uncouth as he can to the women and kids. Psy yanks chairs as women are about to sit and kicks footballs away from the reach of crying kids. Maybe there is something in the Korean lyrics we’re clearly missing.

Unanimously, the song falls desperately short, not just on music, but also on the dance antics and sheer energy when compared to Gangnam Style. The views counter is surely not going to stop ticking though. Once you’ve seen Gangnam Style, you surely won’t be able to stop yourself from watching Gentleman. Whether you’ll want to loop it and make parody videos around it is a whole different question.

In December, Gangnam Style had officially become the first video ever on YouTube to garner a billion views worldwide. The catchy Korean song with its trademark horse dance was first uploaded on YouTube on July 15 and became a viral sensation instantly, with parody videos from all over the world cropping up. Currently, the video has over one and a half million views.

Earlier in January, in a rare disclosure on the company’s fourth quarter earnings call, Google's Chief Business Officer Nikesh Arora revealed that the most-viewed video on YouTube of all times had made a killing in earnings off the video hosting site, earning about $8 million from the video hosting site alone.

Gangnam Style became a popular celebratory style with celebrities and athletes alike dancing like Psy on the song. Arguably, one of the most popular celebrations was when the entire West Indian team danced on Gangnam Style post winning the T20 World Cup in India.

Collins Dictionary even picked 'Gangnam Style' as one of the Word of the Year for 2012 to be added to its list of words. CollinsDictionary.com chose one word per month in 2012 to signify the current affairs of that month, and Gangnam Style became the word for November after smashing many records.

Earlier in December, YouTube released the list of most watched videos on the site and not surprisingly, Gangnam Style was on top of the charts the world over. In India, the horse dance track came second only to home-grown Punjabi Rapper Yo! Yo! Honey Singh’s Brown Rang.

Apple To Pay $53 Million To Settle iPhone Warranty Lawsuit

According to a leaked PDF acquired by Wired, Apple has agreed to pay a $53 million class action settlement for its failure to honor warranties for iPhones and iPod Touch devices which were seemingly damaged by water. The issue is that the strips inside those iOS devices (called “Liquid Contact Indicators”, or simply “LCIs”), which were made by 3M, could be triggered even if there wasn’t necessarily actual water damage. Humidity, for example, could give a false positive on the LCIs, which were located in the headphone jacks and dock connectors.

The settlement, which should be filed in San Francisco federal court in the next couple of weeks, provides cash payouts to possibly hundreds of thousands of iPhone and iPod Touch customers that say Apple did not honor either their one-year standard or two-year extended warranty.

According to several lawsuits combined in San Francisco, no matter what the problem, Apple refused to honor warranties if a white indicator tape embedded in the phone near the headphone or charging portals had turned pink or red. However, the tape’s maker, 3M, said humidity, and not water contact, could have caused the color to at least turn pink.

In November 2010 Apple adjusted their damage assessment procedures so that repair staff had to inspect devices even if a device’s indicator tape was “triggered” and changed color. Prior to that change, Apple would rely on the indicator tape when determining a liquid damage event, which would not be covered by Apple’s warranty.

The devices encompassed in the lawsuit include the original iPhone, the iPhone 3G, the iPhone 3GS, and the first three generations of the iPod Touch. The ballpark estimate for payouts is about $200 per claim, but that figure could either rise or decline depending on how many affected users actually submit a claim. The type of device affected will also influence the extent of individual payouts.

Apple also agreed to set up a website where users can learn about the case and access all documents needed to either submit a claim via the web or by printing out a mailable form.

Twitter announces 200 million active users on seventh birthday

Popular social network and micro-blogging platform, Twitter, has completed seven years of existence. The day marks the occasion when Twitter co-founder, Jack Dorsey, sent out the first tweet. To mark the occasion, Twitter has also revealed that it has more than 200 million active users sending over 400 million tweets every day. This means that the social network has added 60 million users since last year. It had announced 140 million active users and 340 million tweets a day, last year, on the occasion of its sixth birthday.

The company has also created a video to celebrate some of the key moments on Twitter. The video showcases Jack Dorsey's first "just setting up my Twttr" tweet on 21 March 2006, the first hashtag and retweet in 2007, the launch of the first official Twitter Japan service in 2008, the first tweet from space, the Egyptian revolution at Tahrir square, Japan earthquake and tsunami, London olympics, US presidential elections, Grammys and the launch of the Vine app, among other events. The video reflects how Twitter has played a pivotal role in connecting people across the world on different occasions including during the time of revolutions, sporting events, calamity and new feats.

While there's a growing debate on whether Twitter has empowered the common man, giving him a megaphone to shout out his opinion or if it's made it easy for anyone to post any information without verifying its credibility, and even malign someone, the medium continues to grow as evident from the increasing number of users and tweets.

Nokia generates $270 million profit but sales drop

Struggling Nokia Corp. turned a net profit of euro 202 million ($270 million) in the fourth quarter, compared with a loss of $1 billion a year earlier, but revenue fell 20 percent as it failed to make gains in the fiercely competitive smartphone market.

The Finnish company said Thursday that revenue dropped to euro 8 billion ($10.6 billion) from euro 10 billion as smartphone sales plunged 55 percent from a year earlier.

Nokia gave a grim outlook saying it expects operating margins in the first quarter of this year to be "approximately negative 2 percent, plus or minus four percentage points." It cited increased competition and lower-than-expected demand for its flagship Lumia phones and cheaper Asha models.

Nokia sold 15.9 million smartphones in the quarter, down from 19.6 million a year earlier, including 4.4 million Lumia phones. In all, it sold 45 million mobile phones in the period, 15 percent less than in 2011.

CEO Stephen Elop said he was encouraged that the company's strategy had reached "underlying profitability" and strengthened its financial position but cautioned that more cutbacks could be expected.

"We remain focused on moving through our transition, which includes continuing to improve our product competitiveness, accelerate the way we operate and manage our costs effectively," Elop said.

Elop said Nokia Siemens Networks "drove record profitability" during the quarter. The networks unit - a joint-venture with Germany's Siemens AG - saw its operating profit surge to euro 251 million from euro 67 million the previous year, while revenue was up 5 percent at euro 4 billion.

The unit has been loss-making for years but restructuring measures including substantial job cuts have improved its performance.

The company's stock dropped more 3 percent to euro 3.30 in early afternoon trading in Helsinki.

Apple ships record 47.8 million iPhones and 22.9 million iPads in Q1 2013
Apple's blockbuster revenue growth is slowing drastically, as iPhone sales plateau and the company finds itself lacking revolutionary new products.

The company's warning, issued Wednesday as part of its financial results for the holiday quarter, sent Apple Inc.'s stock plunging by more than 10 percent, wiping out a year's worth of gains.

Analysts said the warning suggested Apple can no longer sustain its growth without some completely new products. Its last revolutionary creation, the iPad, was launched in 2010. Co-founder Steve Jobs, who was the engine behind the creation of the iPod, iPhone and iPad, died in 2011.

"It has been an overriding concern with Apple that they would not be able to generate revenue growth just rolling out new versions of old products," said Jeff Sica, president and chief investment officer of SICA Wealth Management. "Now they've proven it in their numbers."

On a conference call with analysts, Apple CEO Tim Cook rebutted that idea, but as usual, gave no details.

"We're working on some incredible stuff. The pipeline is chock full," he said.

Before he died in 2011, Apple co-founder Steve Jobs told biographer Walter Isaacson that he had figured out how to create a groundbreaking, easy-to-use TV set. Since then, company watchers have been waiting for the company to bring out something in that vein to re-energize sales. Cook said the company was still working on it.

"I tend to believe that there's a lot we can contribute in the space, and so we continue to pull the string and see where it leads us," he said.

Apple said it expects sales of between $41 billion and $43 billion in the current quarter, which ends in March. That would usually be little cause for concern, even though analysts were expecting $45.6 billion, because Apple usually lowballs its forecasts. But Chief Financial Officer Peter Oppenheimer said the company is changing its practices and providing a reasonable range rather than a single, easily achievable number.

That means Apple is looking at sales growth of about 7 percent from last year's January to March quarter, a striking number for a company that's posted double-digit increases in every quarter except one since 2008.

Apple's stock fell $55.58 to $458.43 in extended trading, after the release of the results. The shares are down 35 percent from their all-time high, hit Sept. 21, when the iPhone 5 launched.

Fueled by earlier versions of the iPhone, Apple's market capitalization decisively overtook that of Exxon Mobil in early 2012, making it the world's most valuable company. With Wednesday's drop, Apple is worth just 5 percent more than Exxon.

Apple's enviable profit growth also hit a wall in the October to December quarter. It said net income in the fiscal first quarter was $13.1 billion, or $13.81 per share, flat with a year ago. That still beat expectations, as analysts polled by FactSet had forecast earnings of $13.48 per share.

Revenue was $54.5 billion, up 18 percent from a year ago. Analysts were expecting $55 billion. Sales were held back by the fact that the latest quarter had 13 weeks, one less than the corresponding 2011 quarter.

Apple shipped 47.8 million iPhones in the quarter, about 1 million less than analysts were expecting, and 22.9 million iPads, also about 1 million short.

Most surprisingly, Mac sales were also 1 million short, at 4.1 million. That's a 22 percent drop from shipments a year ago. Oppenheimer said this was because Apple couldn't get the new iMac desktops out before December.

Cook said iPhone supplies were short too, and the company could have sold more of both the iPhone 5 and older iPhone 4 if it had been able to make more.

Most technology companies would be ecstatic if they posted 18 percent sales growth and $13 billion in profit for a single quarter, but Apple is held to a high standard, set by the shocking, iPhone-propelled success of the last few years.

"Apple has been growing tremendously and that level of growth can't be sustained by any company," said Sarah Rotman Epps, senior analyst at Forrester Research.

Investors have already been concerned that Apple's strategy of keeping the price of the iPhone high means it's losing out on sales, particularly overseas. Consumers are instead opting to buy cheaper smartphones running Google Inc.'s Android software, which has propelled South Korea's Samsung Electronics to the world's largest maker of smartphones. The average wholesale price of the iPhone is $640, hundreds of dollars more than smartphones with comparable hardware.

There's speculation among company watchers that the company will produce a cheaper iPhone, but that would cut into its profit margin and could tarnish the company's image as a purveyor of premium products.

Apple had warned that the holiday quarter's profits would be lower than Wall Street was initially expecting, because it had so many new products coming out, including the iPhone 5 and iPad Mini. New production lines are more expensive to run and yield more defective products that need to be redone or thrown out rather than sold.

Google: 'Gangnam Style' earns $8 million for YouTube

Google said Tuesday that the YouTube page showcasing the "Gangnam Style" video by South Korean rapper Psy has reaped more than $8 million in ad revenue.

Google Chief Business Officer Nikesh Arora revealed the figure while discussing the money-making potential of YouTube during a quarterly earnings call with financial analysts.

Ad revenue from popular YouTube videos is shared with creators of the content.

In December, "Gangnam Style" became the first video to break a billion views on YouTube, marking a historic milestone on the Internet.

A counter at the YouTube page showed that the music video has been watched more than 1.23 billion times since it was uploaded in July of last year.

Kevin Allocca, YouTube's trends manager, attributed Psy's success "to the universal appeal of catchy music and er, great equine dance moves."

"Gangnam" is estimated to have earned the rapper millions more from digital downloads, advertising deals and on-demand services.

The song which refers to a trendy Seoul district spawned a mini tribute video industry, complete with copycats.

The quirky star, whose real name is Park Jae-Sang, won adulation in his homeland for the global hit and was awarded one of South Korea's highest cultural honors, the Okgwan Order of Cultural Merit.

"The response from fans has been overwhelming. "We are thrilled players want more of the Temple Run universe, and we hope to grow and expand the game over the coming months," says Keith Shepherd, co-founder of Imangi.

For now Temple Run 2 is available for iOS, but the non-stop running game will soon be making its way to the Google Play Store. As per reports in Android Community, Temple Run 2 is expected to be available for Android on January 24.

The free app comes with tons of new gameplay features and storylines offering more diverse and stunning environments with the introduction of new traps and hurdles along the way. Imangi says the game now also has new characters, more powerups, special achievements, better gameplay graphics and this time round a bigger monkey chasing you down the structures.
