Microsoft Will Reportedly (Sort Of) Bring Back The Start Button In Windows 8.1

national nightmare is over: according to a rumor sourced by the Verge, Redmond will bring back the Start button in the lower left corner of the upcoming Windows 8.1. This icon – essentially a copy of the “charm” that appears on the right side of the desktop when you mouse to the edge of the screen – will simply bring up the live tile interface. It is not, however, a real start menu like the one activated by Pokki, a start menu replacement.

While naysayers will point to this as a failure on Microsoft’s part – “no compromises” and the like – I suspect what this really is is SOP thrown to IT departments who are afraid their users will bolt once they see the jolly candy-colored tiles. Given that the vast majority of enterprise and legacy software will not be rewritten to take advantage of Windows 8, it makes perfect sense to boot into desktop mode. After all, a computerized lathe controller on a shop floor probably doesn’t need much of an interface.

In the popular imagination, Microsoft seems to be flailing. In reality, I’d wager they’re right on track, compromises and all.

Apple was reportedly in talks with Goodreads for iBooks integration

It appears that book-recommendation service, Goodreads had been in talks with Apple to integrate its service with the latter's iBookstore, before being acquired by Amazon.

A report by The Wall Street Journal suggests that Goodreads and Apple were in talks on bringing Goodread's reviews and ratings appear within iTunes' iBookstore when users searched for a book title. The report cited people familiar with the talks to inform that the talks didn't reach a conclusion, and when Apple executives tried to reach Goodreads again, it had got close to Amazon which insisted that it stopped talking to other companies.

The report also suggests that an Apple executive not part of iBooks approached Goodreads to explore 'other options' but Goodreads refused.

It's worth pointing out that Apple offers its own Ratings and Reviews under iBooks but they're not integrated with social networks. Integrating with a third party site would help Apple bring a wider range of reviews and recommendations, including reviews from critics and celebrities, and in promoting community based reading. Apple has already integrated reviews from Rotten Tomatoes in its Movies store.

Last month, Amazon had acquired Goodreads for an undisclosed amount, with an intent to integrate book recommendations, complementing reader reviews provided at Amazon.com's online shop for digital book titles.

Since launching in early 2007, Goodreads has grown to boast more than 16 million members and 30,000 book clubs. Features at Goodreads include tracking books read, discovering new titles, and connecting directly with authors.

Goodreads will remain in San Francisco, according to Amazon.com, which has its headquarters in Seattle.

The acquisition was a bit of a blow to Apple whose digital books service iBooks, competes with Amazon's Kindle book store and Google's Play Store through which Google offers digital books.

81 per cent of Facebook users don't want to be friends with their boss

Washington: At least 81 per cent people believe that there is one person you should never be friends with on Facebook - your boss - according to a new survey.

The survey of 722 people conducted by two websites found that 81 per cent said you should not be Facebook friends with your boss.

Slightly more men than women said it was alright to friend your boss, the survey site SodaHead and anonymous feedback site YouTell found.

Those aged between 25 to 34 are the most comfortable with befriending their boss on the social networking site, Huffington Post report.

Those aged between 25 to 34 were the most comfortable with befriending their boss on the social networking site, 'Huffington Post' reported.

While there seemed to be a consensus on not befriending the boss on Facebook, people were less sure when it came to being friends with colleagues on the site.

In a parallel survey that asked whether or not you should be Facebook friends with your co-workers, 55 per cent said yes and 45 per cent said no.

Employees probably don't want bosses to see embarrassing information about them, and don't want to have to censor Facebook photos from their wild college days.

The fears may not be totally unfounded as people have been fired for Facebook posts.

In 2009, a Swiss woman was fired from her insurance job because she had told her boss that she couldn't work at her computer and needed to lie down in the dark. She was fired when she was seen to be active on Facebook.

In 2010, a woman was fired from her waitressing job after complaining about a pair of customers on her Facebook page.

Nokia to launch Windows Phone-based phablet to rival Samsung's Galaxy Note series: Report

Following reports of Microsoft's plans to update Windows Phone 8 to support full-HD displays, new rumours of Nokia working on a large screen smartphone or phablet that's similar in size to Samsung's Galaxy Note series have surfaced online.

According to a report by Financial Times, Nokia intends to launch a number of flagship devices later this year, including a supersized tablet phone. The publication cited people with knowledge of the company's plan to report the development. They said that the phablet would be similar in size to the Galaxy Note but will have advanced specifications.

Just a week back, a report had indicated that Microsoft will issue an update later this year that will bring support for 1080p resolution to Windows Phone 8. Presently, Windows Phone 8 supports only WVGA, WXGA, and 720p resolutions. The update will reportedly also add support for devices with displays that measure 5-inches and bigger. So the news might turn out to be accurate, however, it's difficult to estimate the exact time frame.

The FT report also confirms that Nokia intends to launch a Lumia phone that will use its Pureview imaging technology in July. The handset will sport a 40 megapixel camera and a flash.

We had earlier heard about about Nokia developing not one, but two models of Nokia Pureview 808-like devices, running Windows Phone, called Nokia EOS.

Both these smartphones are expected to feature exactly the same specifications apart from the processor. One of these smartphones could reportedly come with a dual-core processor while the other is expected to be powered by Snapdragon 800 quad-core processor. Though Nokia is reportedly working on both quad-core and dual-core version of Nokia EOS, the report mentioned that the company is likely to announce only one of these smartphones.

Microsoft Is Developing a Smart Watch, Report Says

Microsoft is reportedly joining Apple, Samsung and LG in the race to develop a smart watch.

The software giant is working on designs for a touchscreen watch device, according to the Wall Street Journal, which cited anonymous executives at suppliers.

In early 2013, Microsoft asked Asian suppliers to ship parts for a potential watch-style device, the executives said. One source added that he had a meeting with Microsoft's research and development team at its Redmond, Wash. headquarters.

Microsoft did not immediately respond to a request to confirm reports.

The company is no stranger to wrist computing. It previously collaborated with Fossil and other watchmakers to create the Smart Personal Object Technology, which was a watch that could link to a user's PC computer via a cable. SPOT provided stock, weather and other updates.

Rumors that Microsoft's competitors are developing smart watches have also swirled online. Sources inside Apple's Cupertino, Calif. headquarters confirmed in February that the company is working on a wristwatch made with curved glass.

A Samsung executive said last month that the Korean electronics giant has been "preparing the watch product for so long."

And for its part, LG is also getting into the smart-watch game, according to sources.

BlackBerry refutes reports claiming Z10s being returned by buyers

BlackBerry has reacted strongly to claims by an investment house that the company’s brand new Z10 handset is being turned back in by buyers after being dissatisfied with its performance.

Issued earlier this week, the report by Detwiler Fenton & Company in Boston, USA, says that the BlackBerry Z10 phone is being returned by buyers at an above-average rate. However, the Waterloo, Ontario-based company has refuted these claims and has suggested that the report is an attempt to manipulate the company’s share price. Going one step further, BlackBerry has even said that it would ask the Securities and Exchange Commission to investigate Detwiler Fenton’s report.

BlackBerry claims that Detwiler Fenton refused to hand over the report to BlackBerry’s investors or the methodology behind it to the Canadian company, even after they were said to be "absolutely false."

BlackBerry is up in arms about a report saying Z10s are being returned to stores by buyers

"Sales of the BlackBerry Z10 are meeting expectations and the data we have collected from our retail and carrier partners demonstrates that customers are satisfied with their devices," BlackBerry President and CEO Thorsten Heins said, before adding, "Return rate statistics show that we are at or below our forecasts and right in line with the industry. To suggest otherwise is either a gross misreading of the data or a wilful manipulation. Such a conclusion is absolutely without basis and BlackBerry will not leave it unchallenged."

BlackBerry Chief Legal Officer Steve Zipperstein called the report "materially false and misleading." He added," We call upon the appropriate authorities in Canada and the United States to conduct an immediate investigation. Everyone is entitled to their opinion about the merits of the many competing products in the smartphone industry, but when false statements of material fact are deliberately purveyed for the purpose of influencing the markets a red line has been crossed."

Zipperstein said that his company would present a formal request to US and Canadian regulators in the next few weeks.

Anne Buckley, general counsel and Chief Compliance Officer at Detwiler Fenton, said there was no reason for the firm to doubt its findings. “We are confident in our research methodology and we welcome any regulatory inquiry. Detwiler Fenton is not the only research provider publishing similar reports regarding customer reactions, sales and returns of the BlackBerry Z10,” Buckley said in a statement.

Google, EU near deal on search probe: Report

BRUSSELS: US Internet giant Google is preparing changes to its dominant search system to satisfy EU anti-trust authorities, the Financial Times said Saturday.

In a five-year accord with Brussels, Google has promised to make users "clearly aware" when promoting its own search services in specialised areas such as restaurants, finance and shopping, the FT said, citing people familiar with the deal.

It will also highlight links to rival specialised search services.

EU Competition Commissioner Joaquin Almunia told the New York Times on Tuesday that Google had to clearly differentiate its services from others but stressed that the company would not have to change the key underlying algorithms which drive the product.

The EU launched its investigation of Google in November 2010 following a complaint by several companies, including US software giant Microsoft.

In February, Brussels said it had received proposals aimed at ending the probe and was examining them with a view to announcing its decision by the middle of the year.

Earlier, the US Federal Trade Commission dropped a similar investigation, saying it lacked a legal basis to bring a case against Google.

Critics say Google controls about 70 percent of the Internet search market and the advertising that goes along with it.

The search probe is one of a series of regulatory problems facing Google.

This week, a group of major companies, including Microsoft and OracleBSE -1.37 %, complained to the European Commission over Google's offerings for its Android-powered mobile phones.

Last week, six European countries, including France and Britain, launched joint action against Google to get it to scale back new monitoring powers that watchdogs believe violate EU privacy protection rules.

Eighty percent of respondents check Google Reader many times a day: Survey

Results of the survey that Digg sent out to those who signed up to help with building the reader are out, and so are some interesting insights.

Compiling the responses it received, Digg has found that 80 percent of the respondents check Google Reader several times a day while 40 percent of readers follow over 100 feeds. These numbers have led Digg to conclude that "this is a product for power users," and that they would have to "make sure we have some serious infrastructure in place to support that kind of usage for launch."

When asked what do they use Google Reader for, more than 75 percent of the respondents replied that they used it for both work and play.

The end of Google Reader is imminent, and in such a situation, users are looking out for alternatives. The survey suggests that users are trying a lot of different types of RSS products but have not found the one to settle down with.

Here's what users would want to remove from Reader

Digg had sent its survey to over 17,000 respondents, and it claims to have received over 8,000 responses so far.

Those who've been using Google Reader religiously would definitely know of the keyboard shortcuts. When Digg quizzed users, if they used keyboard shortcuts in Google Reader, 67 percent responded saying that they use keyboards shortcuts "at least some of the time". If you're eagerly awaiting the Digg reader, then you should know that they have this one on their list too.

Search is another feature on Google Reader and 25 percent of the respondents admitted to never using it. However, over half of the users admitted to using it sometimes. While Digg has this on its list too, it adds, "We don’t yet know if we’ll have the necessary infrastructure up and running in time for our initial beta launch".

Digg decided to wrap up the survey with a bunch of open ended questions, which they have showcased on a word cloud.

In mid-March this year, when news about Google planning to eventually shut down Reader started getting hotter, Digg announced that it was moving its plans of building a Reader-like reader to the top of its list.

"We’ve heard people say that RSS is a thing of the past, and perhaps in its current incarnation it is, but as daily (hourly) users of Google Reader, we’re convinced that it’s a product worth saving. So we’re going to give it our best shot," the Digg post said, announcing the move. As part of this process, Digg reveals that it wishes to "identify and rebuild the best of Google Reader's features", and this includes the latter's API. In doing so, they plan to make it progressive enough to fit the Internet of 2013."

What makes this deal interesting is that Digg is seeking the opinions and inputs of the users on what they'd like to see in a reader. "In order to pull this off in such a small window, we’re going to need your help. We need your input on what you want to see in a reader. What problems should it solve for you? What’s useful? What isn’t? What do you wish it could do that it can’t today?" the post added.

Apple cutting Samsung out of any role in A7 chip development: Report

Samsung is said to be playing no role in the development of Apple's forthcoming A7 chip as the iPhone-maker looks to reduce its dependence on the Korean company.

Mac Rumours reports via The Korean Times that Apple is going ahead with its plans of developing the next generation chip with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co (TSMC). This development would represent a new level of cooperation between the two companies after earlier reports suggested that the Taiwanese company had been contracted to manufacture the A6X chip, which drives Apple's 4th generation iPad.

"Apple is sharing confidential data for its next A7 System-on-Chip (SoC) with the Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC). TSMC has begun ordering its contractors to supply equipment to produce Apple's next processors using a finer 20-nanometer level processing technology," an executive at one of Samsung's local partners told The Korea Times.

Samsung has been one of Apple's key suppliers over the years, but the rise of the Korean company as the biggest smartphone maker in the world, and the subsequent legal battle between the two in various countries across the world seems to have forced an Apple rethink. Any move to alternative suppliers will not only reduce Apple's dependence on a company that is now clearly a major rival, it will also make a dent in Samsung's revenues.

Samsung, on its part, is said to be looking for other clients as well. Nvidia may be one such client as Samsung hopes to play a bigger role in manufacturing graphic chips for the American company. However some warn that if Apple leaves, it will be too big a gap to fill.

"If Samsung fails to win Apple orders for A7 chips, then some of Samsung's system chip-manufacturing lines will be stopped. That's a scenario Samsung really doesn't want to see," an official of another Samsung supplier told The Korean Times.

iPhone 5S coming this August with more than two colour options: Report

iPhone 5S, the next generation iPhone, would come in a number of colours including black and white, as per a report by Japanese website Macotakara via (MacRumors). The report adds that the much rumoured cheaper iPhone will also come in a range of different colours. It suggests that the iPhone 5S would be announced in July and will see an August release.

In addition to the prediction related to multiple colours, it's also predicted that the next iPhone would come in different sizes. Topeka Capital Markets analyst Brian White, has said in his research note that Apple will release the iPhone 5S in two or three screen sizes this summer. He also suggests a July launch and mentions that he believes that Apple would launch a cheaper iPhone.

It's not the first time that White has predicted multiple screen sizes. In January, he had said that the next iPhone may come in multiple colours and different sizes. White had also predicted that the next iPhone would come in a total of eight colours.

There's some confusion on the number of colours that the iPhone is rumoured to sport as it's not clear from the Macotakara report if Apple would add three new colours to the existing set or a single colour.

The site translates the rumour as:
"It seems that it will have gossiped if the 5-color lineup of low-priced edition iPhone is carried out until now, but iPhone 5S may be 3 colors added to 2 colors of iPhone 5 1 color somehow. However, the informed sources did not tell about the kind of detailed color."
Also, there's no mention of the additional colours but the present generation iPod touch is available in white, black, yellow, blue, and pink, in addition to a special red edition.

It seems that multiple analysts and industry watchers have agreed on the next iPhone launching in July-August. iMore's Rene Ritchie had also predicted that the iPhone 5S, is likely to release in August. The Wall Street Journal had also suggested a summer launch. Amit Daryanani of RBC Capital Markets had also claimed that Apple will launch the iPhone 5S and the much-rumoured cheaper iPhone in June or July.

Apple working on $330 iPhone with polycarbonate body: Report

It has been only five months since the launch of the iPhone 5 and there are already a lot of rumours going around the new iPhone. Some feel that this new device will be dubbed as the iPhone 5S while others claim iPhone 6 could be the likely name.

However, a recent report by Apple Insider via Japanese blog Macotakara claims that Apple is currently working on two different iPhone models. One of these will be a successor to the iPhone 5 with a 4.5-inch screen and the other a cheaper smartphone model sporting a polycarbonate body.

The material used for the polycarbonate iPhone is touted to be similar to the one on Apple's discontinued 13-inch MacBook.

The Apple Insider via the Japanese blog is mentioning that Apple seems to have delayed their plans to launch iPhone 5's successor. This smartphone will now be launched sometime in 2014, while the more affordable one is likely to be launched soon. Macotakara mentions that Apple seeks to achieve a retail price of $330 for the cheaper model, which is significantly lower than the $650 price that an unlocked iPhone 5 carries. A likely improvement in the iPhone 5 successor could be a dual-LED flash.

There have also been murmurs regarding a cheaper version of the iPhone being in the making in the past. However Apple has denied these rumours.

Earlier in the month, a Chinese website has posted what it claims are pictures of Apple iPhone 5S being manufactured at Foxconn's facility in China. As per these pictures, the new iPhone looks akin to the recently launched iPhone 5. However, one cannot be certain if these pictures are real or not.

Even in the past there have been rumours that suggested that Apple is working on multiple devices with varied screen sizes.

In January, Brian White, an analyst from Topeka Capital Markets, had also indicated that Apple may launch iPhone with varied screen sizes. According to him with the help of this move, the company will be able to have a greater reach. He specifically mentions a smaller iPhone version that could allow Apple to target markets like China and open up opportunities in India.

There are also murmurs in regards to Apple looking at launching multiple colours for the next model of the iPhone. Apple has introduced the 5th generation iPod touch devices in a range of new colours along with the traditional white colour and it some expect that iPhone and even the new iPad devices may follow suit.

Samsung hires judge who upheld anti-Apple verdict: Report

Remember the Samsung vs Apple UK case that saw one of the most bizarre court rulings you'll ever come across? That's right, we're talking about the infamous case that concluded with Apple being ordered to run "Samsung didn't copy iPad" ads.

The original case was supervised by Judge Colin Birss who heard Apple's petition alleging that Samsung's Galaxy tablets had infringed its design. Judge Birss first ruled that Samsung couldn't have copied the iPad because its products were "not as cool" as Apple's. Later, the same judge ordered Apple to run "Samsung didn't copy iPad" ads on its website and various popular publications.

Apple appealed this decision but the original ruling was upheld by a bench comprising Sir Robin Jacob and two other judges. Sir Jacob, a retired judge who was invited to sit on the bench for the case, gave the first opinion for the court, dismissing Apple's appeal.

Apple complied with the order, issuing what many termed as a half-hearted "apology" on its website. The bench promptly asked Apple to follow its order strictly, and rewrite the notice on its website. Judge Jacob went on to question Apple's integrity, noting in his concluding remarks, "I hope that the lack of integrity involved in this incident is entirely atypical of Apple."

The same Sir Robin Jacob is now listed as one of nine experts "working on behalf of Respondents Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd., Samsung Electronics America, Inc., and Samsung Telecommunications America LLC" in Samsung's reply to US International Trade Commission's investigation in to a patent infringement complaint filed by Ericsson against Samsung on November 30, 2012. This development was first reported by fosspatents.com.

As the original report notes, this may no doubt be within the letter of the law, but it's sure to raise a few eyebrows over at Cupertino.

iPhone most popular in US, while Android popular worldwide in Q4 2012: Report

Apple's iPhone remained the most popular smartphone among US buyers in the closing months of 2012 while Android handsets were on top worldwide, Kantar Worldpanel ComTech reported on Tuesday.

"At the end of 2012, the global (operating system) picture shows Android on top, but clearly the rate of growth it experienced over the past year is beginning to slow as easy wins from first-time smartphone buyers begin to reduce," said Kantar global consumer insight director Dominic Sunnebo.

Apple iPhones accounted for 51.2 percent of smartphone sales in the United States during the 12-week period ending December 23rd of last year, according to Kantar.

Smartphones powered by Google-backed Android software made up slightly more than 44 percent of sales while handsets based on Microsoft's Windows operating system were a distant third-place with 2.6 percent, the report indicated.

Android smartphones continued to be best sellers in major markets including Britain, China, Spain, Australia, and Germany while iPhones were favored in Japan as well as the United States, according to Kantor.

Windows smartphones appeared to be catching on in Europe, with its shares of sales in Britain and Italy climbing to 5.9 and 13.9 percent respectively, the reported indicated.

"Windows Phone is now starting to gain respectable shares in a number of key European countries," Sunnebo said.

"However, its performance in the Chinese and US markets remains underwhelming; these remain key challenges for Microsoft to overcome during 2013."

Apple poaches Samsung chip designer Jim Mergard: Report

Apple has reportedly swooped in to sign chip designer Jim Mergard from Samsung. The move comes in the backdrop of the bitter Apple vs Samsung battle that has played out in courtrooms and markets all across the world.

Jim Mergard, a former AMD employee, joins Apple months after Jim Keller, a director in the platform architecture group and considered to be one of the key men behind Apple's A4 and A5 chips, left the company in August to make a return to AMD.

The Wall Street Journal was first to report Mergard's move:
The gadget maker (Apple) has hired Jim Mergard, a 16-year veteran of Advanced Micro Devices AMD who was a vice president and chief engineer there before he left for Samsung. He is known for playing a leading role in the development of a high-profile AMD chip that carried the code name Brazos and was designed for low-end portable computers.
The obvious thing for Mergard to do would be to join Apple's system-on-a-chip (SoC) design effort that has seen plenty of progress since the company first ventured in the territory with the Apple A4. More recently, the iPhone 5 is powered by Apple's A6 chip that is said to have twice as much CPU and GPU power compared to its predecessor.

WSJ also speculates if Mergard would design a custom-processor for use in Apple's Mac line. The report quotes Patrick Moorhead, a former AMD executive who now leads the research firm Moor Insights & Strategy, as saying that "He (Mergard) would be very capable of pulling together internal and external resources to do a PC processor for Apple."

While it's certainly possible for Apple to design a custom processor for use in its laptops and desktops, it's hard to see the company putting in a major effort towards that end considering Intel processors do a great job at the moment. More importantly, with a fundamental shift away from traditional computers already underway, and Apple at the forefront of that shift, any potential gains from having a custom chip in the Mac line, would be of minimum value at best.

Apple iPad mini won't have 3G: Report

The Apple 'iPad mini', which is likely to be released on October 17, would be a Wi-Fi only tablet, reports have claimed.

LONDON: The Apple 'iPad mini', which is likely to be released on October 17, would be a Wi-Fi only tablet, reports have claimed.

The new device is not thought to be capable of connecting to the internet via 3G or 4G.

According to the Guardian, industry sources revealed Apple would also release a new version of the existing iPad, which will be 4G-capable in the UK, through Everything Everywhere's 1800MHz network

Launching the iPad Mini without 3G or 4G connectivity would keep costs down, which could allow Apple to price the tablet in line with its 7-inch rivals.

According to the sources the new products is likely to be launched in November.

One company, Knomo, which designs cases for Apple products, said on Tuesday that it would have an iPad mini case available within days, even though no invitations have yet been sent out for any launch, the report said.

Apple orders 10 million iPad minis for Q4 2012: Report

With the iPhone 5 launch over, the next big thing expected to be showcased by Apple is believed to be the iPad mini, a 7.85-inch model of the highly successful tablet. A report now suggest that the brand has ordered 10 million units of this mini tablet for the fourth quarter of this year alone.

As per a report by The Wall Street Journal, “Some component suppliers to Apple in Asia say they have received orders to make more than 10 million units of the smaller tablets in the fourth quarter. That is roughly double the order that were placed for Amazon’s Kindle Fire tablets in the same quarter, these suppliers say. The figure indicates that Apple believes demand for the product will be strong, despite stiff competition in the market. Apple hasn’t responded to requests for comment on the smaller tablet dubbed by the industry as the iPad mini.”

Apple expecting a good quarter

An earlier report stated that the 7.85-inch iPad mini is expected to be unveiled on October 17. Sources in Apple's supply chain in Taiwan have indicated that shipments of the iPad mini tablets are not smooth at the moment, due to low yield rates at chassis makers. Case makers Foxconn Electronics, Catcher Technology and Ri-Teng Computer Accessory are responsible for production of the iPad mini chassis. Ri-Teng is an associate company of Pegatron. Catcher declined to comment on market reports, but stated that its capacity utilisation rates as well as yield rates for various products all meet its product roadmap.

The report goes on to add that the iPad mini will come in a native and black coloured aluminium chassis, and that they are more vulnerable to scratches, as per the website’s sources. The report states that anodised finish process on the black casing is more critical and hence, will result in lower yield rates.

Apple has an outstanding track record of delivering quality hardware that could handle the wear and tear of daily use. However, as in the case of the iPhone 5, and the model with the black casing, it appears that it has fallen short. The casing gets scratched easily. It now appears that Apple is ensuring that this does not happen with the iPad mini as well.

The iPad mini, which has not been announced yet, was said to be under production in a factory in Brazil. As per an exclusive report by UkranianiPhone.com, the website has received photos of the outer casing of the diminutive tablet.

However, if Apple has ordered 10 million units of the device, it appears that it is expecting a successful launch.
